The Haka
If you watch the New Zealand All Blacks rugby team, you may see them do the haka before the start of a match. The haka is a traditional Maori dance that can express strong emotions. It is performed with powerful movements of hands, arms and legs, shouting and stamping of feet. Strong facial expressions are also part of the dance. Performers widen their eyes, stretch out their tongue or show their teeth. Most people only know the haka as the war dance the All Blacks perform, but there are different types of haka for different Maori ceremonies and celebrations. Haka dances are often performed at birthdays, weddings, funerals, or to welcome guests.
