• Direct speech / reporte speech repeats the exact words the person used, or how we remember their words:
• Barbara said, “I didn’t realise it was midnight.”

• In indirect speech, the original speaker’s words are changed.
• Barbara said she hadn’t realised it had been midnight.

THe word "that" isn’t always necessary in reported speech sentences:

He said (that) he loved singing.

"My mother is taking the bus to work tomorrow".

Turn into indirect speech:
Peter said to John: "Why are you so late?"

1. Peter asked to John why he so late was

Turn into reported speech:
Julie: "I want to go out."

1. Julie said that I want to go out
