  1. Possession  - to show belonging
  2. Omission - to join 2 words into one. 

They are NOT used for plural words.

  • The apostrophe can be used to show that someone or something belongs to someone or something 
  • For example:
  • The city's charm
  • My mum's car
  • The college's canteen
  • The gym's failure

What happens if the owner is plural?
  • The apostrophe comes immediately after the owner:
  • The girl's books but if there is more than one girl it is the girls' books
  • The boy's pens but if there is more than one boy, it is the boys' pens
  • The men's ideas
