Slide 6 - Diapositive

How much do you know already?
How many articles are in the following sentences?

The brown dog is lying on the floor in
the corner of the room. It has a red collar
and is eating a steak. It has a ripped-up toy
laying next to it.

Slide 7 - Diapositive

The brown dog is lying on the floor in the corner of the room.
It has a red collar and is eating a steak. It has a ripped-up toy laying next to it.

That means the sentence has 7 articles in it.

Slide 8 - Diapositive

Articles
Articles are placed before a noun.
Two types of articles:
  1. Definite article: THE
  2. Indefinite article: or AN

Examples:
The book on this shelf is mine.
I’d rather eat a pear than an apple.

Slide 9 - Diapositive

Definite article: the
You know/understand what you're talking about.

Compare with Dutch:
the = de/het

Slide 10 - Diapositive

Indefinite article: a/an
1.  A new topic, not mentioned before:
I need a new phone.

2.  Something in general:
I started reading a good book yesterday.

Compare with Dutch:
a/an = een

Slide 11 - Diapositive

Examples

the/ a pet               the/a teacher           the/a bicycle

Slide 12 - Diapositive

ATTENTION!
The choice of a or an is not what you read on paper, but the sound you hear.

Sometimes you see a noun starting with -h.  However, it is not pronounced! Then you put the article AN before it:  AN hour.
The -h is not pronounced (‘our')

an hour  (you hear our)
an honour (you hear onour)
a university (you hear juniversity)
