A Person of Commitment

• CBA1 in Religion is focused on ‘A Person of Commitment’
  
• A person of commitment is a person whose religious beliefs, values or worldview have had a positive impact on the world around them (we will continue on this in next lesson)
• For the meantime we will go over religious beliefs, values, worldviews and how they can positively impact the world
  

Religion & Beliefs

Religion is a collection of cultural systems, belief systems, and worldviews that relate humanity to spirituality and, sometimes, to moral values
You know what a belief is (an acceptance that something exists or is true, especially one without proof)
So what is a Religious Belief?

• When you believe something you might not have immediate personal knowledge but you are satisfied that something is the way it is, for example, within Christianity that Jesus is the Son of God
  
• It also means beliefs which exist within a religion, but which are not shared by everybody within that religion
  

People & Their Values

Peoples’ values can be varied, they can range from loyalty, to integrity (to know and do what is right, according to their beliefs)

 

E.g. Greta Thunbergs (climate change activist) values are:

• Harmony (with nature and the world)
  
• Solidarity (with other people to make a change)
  
• Biospheric (caring about the environment)
  

Worldview

A worldview is essentially a non-religious belief system

Someone may believe that trusts to the scientific method when it comes to understanding how the universe works

They reject the idea of the supernatural (something that can’t be proven true)

Make their ethical decisions based on reason, empathy, and a concern for human beings and other animals

Examples:

• Humanism
  
• Atheism
  
• Agnosticism

So...

How can a person’s religious beliefs, values and worldviews have a positive impact on the world around them

Now that you remember what those keywords mean,

• In your classroom based assessment, 

      you are asked to pick a person

• This person has to be a person of commitment of some sort
  
• They don’t necessarily have to be religious as it can be based on their values and/or worldview
  
• If you do however pick a religious person, you would focus on their beliefs and/or values
  

Then what?

1. Once you have a person chosen, you will research them & their work
2. You will have to mention specific points in order to succeed
   
3. I will give you specific questions to guide you
   
4. You will then decide on a way to report on your person
   
5. There is a lot of options for you to choose from for your presentation
6. Lastly you will create your report and (if necessary) you will also present it
   

Hint: Focus on these keywords!

• Research (interesting facts/information)
  
• Organisation (well planned & neat)
  
• Informative/beneficial (useful/helpful)
  
• Creativity/Originality (unique)
  

Homework 

• Write a short paragraph on either: ( choose 1)

- Fr. Peter McVerry

- Willie Bermingham

- Greta Thunberg

• In this paragraph mention:
  

- Which of these make them a person of commitment

- Religious beliefs

- Values

- Worldview

• Research them and write down 5 points of information you found interesting
