Past continuous

Je gebruikt de past continuous om aan te geven dat je ergens mee bezig was op een bepaald moment in het verleden. Je zegt dus dat je iets aan het doen was.

Je gebruikt de past continuous dus alleen als je kunt zeggen dat je iets aan het doen was.

The math teacher was giving a test

The principal was sitting in his office

the coach was playing basketball

The gardener was cutting bushes

Je maakt de past continuous door was of were voor het werkwoord te zetten en –ing er achter

I was sleeping

You were living

He/she/it was swimming

We were going

You were doing

They were having

Als een werkwoord uit 1 lettergreep bestaat met 1 klinker in het midden, verdubbelt de medeklinker

To swim – he was swimming

To hit – we were hitting

to get - he was getting hit by the door

The lunchlady ........(to make)lunch when the geography teacher was killed

Past continuous + Past Simple

Als je ergens mee bezig was in de verleden tijd en iets anders gebeurt er tussendoor.

was of were en het ww + ing voor waar dat waar je mee bezig bent.

bv je bent aan het tv kijken/ eten

ww + ed (of 2e rijtje van de onr ww) voor wat er

tussendoor komt - iemand belt op bv

Je was al tv aan het kijken op het 

 moment dat er werd gebeld.

Als twee dingen tegelijkertijd plaatsvinden en ongeveer even lang duren gebruik je twee keer de past continuous.

Er staat dan meestal while in de zin.

the lunchlady was serving food while the principal was sitting in his office

the history teacher was starting his lesson while the gardener was cutting the bushes
