3.1 War in Europe (part 2)

What do you remember from the last lesson?

The start

• - Germany invades Poland on September 1st 1939.
• - Because of the non-agression pact  (Molotov-Ribbentrop pact) Russia attacks too. 
• - Brittain and France declare war on Germany: World War 2 begins

Blitzkrieg

• - The Germans were succesful with their Blitzkrieg.
• 
  
• - Literally: ''Lightning War''
• 
  
• - Blitzkrieg was used to signify a surprise attack or lightning-fast advance. 

War in Europe

• - 10th of May 1940: Hitler attacks Western Europe with succes (the Netherlands had hoped to stay neutral...). 
• - 19th of July 1940: Battle of Britain.
• - 22nd of June 1941: Operation Barbarossa: German attack on Russia...

...which didn't succeed...

Important events

• - Operation Barbarossa was the beginning of the end for Hitler.
• - Turning point in the war was the Battle for Stalingrad.
  
• - 6th of June 1944: D-Day (invasion of Normandy).
  

The Netherlands

• - Autumn 1944: the Southern part of the Netherlands was liberated.
• 
  
• - Battle for the Schelde (There is going to be a movie!)

• - Operation Market Garden (A
•   bridge too far!)

Only the southern part was liberated...

The end of the war

• -  May 1945: Battle of Berlin
• - Even World War 1 veterans and the Hitlerjugend had to fight.
• - Hitler and other Nazi leaders committed suicide.
• - Germany capitulated on 7th of May, 1945.
