Slide 2 - Diapositive

Learning objectives
  • You will learn about the parts of your brain, how they work and how you study.
  • You will learn about the nervous system of worms.

Slide 3 - Diapositive

To make your brain 'crack'
When playing chess, but also with normal, simple things, your brain uses a lot of energy.

Slide 4 - Diapositive

On average, what percentage of your energy is used by your brain, according to you?
A
5%
B
10%
C

The brain

Slide 7 - Diapositive

The brain; the cerebrum
cerebral cortex = completely folded external surface of the cerebrum

sensory cortices = part of the cerebral cortex where awareness takes place or reactions arise.

Slide 8 - Diapositive

The brain; the cerebellum
The cerebellum = part of the brain that is responsible for coordinating larger muscular movements

coördination = delicate tuning of muscle contraction when moving

Slide 9 - Diapositive

Brain and brainstem
brainstem = the connection of cerebrum and cerebellum with your spinal cord

subconscious body = processes of your body that occur automatically

E.g. heart rate, breathing, body temperature, pupillary reflex

The brain is folded to keep it as compact as possible. Many brain cells together.

Slide 10 - Diapositive

Slide 11 - Diapositive

Your brain and learning
New connections between nerve cells

Automation = using the same nerve cells over and over again, so that something happens automatically.

Slide 12 - Diapositive

Memory
Short-term memory = memory information for a short amount of time
(e.g. short shopping list)

Long-term memory = information that you remember for a long time
(e.g. your own phone number)

memory trace = pattern of connections between neurons on the cerebral cortex;

Slide 14 - Diapositive

The nervous system of an earthworm
two nerve centres = centre of neurons where impulses from various senses come together and  are send to other nerve centres or muscles

Two imortant stimuli:
light stimuli (with head and tail)
vibrations (pressure senses in the skin)

What?
Make: 3.6 assignment 3 - 14. This will be homework!
How?
In your book or laptop
Help?
First ask your neighbour, if you can't figure it out, raise your hand.
Time?
10 - 20 minutes, See whiteboard!
Finished?
Decision time!
1. See the shared lesson about 3.2 Seeing.
Study the anatomy of the eye until you know it by heart!

2. Are any non-biology words that you could include in your PIF-file?

Slide 16 - Diapositive

Study objectives
  • You can name the parts of your brain, how they work and how you study.
  • You can explain how the nervous system of an earthworm is different to that of a human.
