Listening strategies

Strategy; How do you listen? Three tips!

There are three ways of listening - also called listening strategies - that you need to practise in order to become an effective listener:

Strategy 1: listening for gist (kern)

You listen to get a general idea of the topic and the main points. You ignore the details and concentrate on the main ideas.

You hear the following:

On a sunny Saturday morning at 9 o’clock, a woman was shot in the leg five times using an AK-47 in a back alley of Rotterdam.

Strategy 2: listening for specific information

You listen in order to understand specific information.

What weapon was used during the shooting this morning?

You hear the following:

On a sunny Saturday morning at 9 o’clock, a woman was shot in the leg five times using an AK-47 in a back alley of Rotterdam.

Strategy 3: listening for detailed understanding

You listen to understand (a part of) a spoken text in great detail. You can’t afford to ignore any information, because you don’t know which information will come up that will interest you or that you will need.

You hear the following: 

On a sunny Saturday morning at 9 o’clock, a woman was shot in the leg five times using an AK-47 in a back alley of Rotterdam.

Listening strategy #3

Je gaat zo kijken naar een interview met drie beroemde acteurs: Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt en Margot Robbie.

Je krijgt de eerste helft van de video te zien. Zorg ervoor dat je zoveel mogelijk onthoud van wat er wordt gezegd. Maak eventueel aantekeningen.
