It's a story of invasion!
The history of English: Old English - Middle English - Early Modern English - Present Day English
 The original language spoken in the British Isles was Celtic.
 1st - 5th century: England province of the Roman Empire, Britannia. The Romans did not leave their language.
Old English: Anglo-Saxons invaded England in the 5th century. Old English became the language of England (50% of our most common modern English words come from OE, such as 'be' and 'strong'
Middle English: William the Conquerer invaded England in 1066 - French words entered the English language. Compare: beef 'boeuf' vs 'cow'
The language we speak today is called Late Modern English.

Some Important Tips
  •  Actually read carefully!
  • Look at the source - what text type is it? What do you expect?
  • Open question in Dutch? -> ANSWER IN DUTCH!
  • Highlight/underline to keep yourself focused.
  • When looking up words - write down the definition immediately.
  • Be smart - use a dictionary
  • If one of the ABCD answers is a word you don’t know, it’s probably the answer!
