Unreliable
Rhythm method
  • Woman keeps track of her menstrual cycle
  • No sex during fertile period

Coïtus interuptus (Withdrawal method)
  • During sex, man stays aware of reaching orgasm
  • Right before he ejaculates, removes his penis from vagina
  • Orgasms 'outside' woman

The Rhythm method is nearly useless when preventing pregnancies. But still has a use.
What is this use?

Short protection
Condom♂ and ♀
  • Only during intercourse, throw away afterwards
  • Prevents Sperm from entering the vagina
  • Very good protection against pregnancy and STI's

The (contraceptive) pill
  • Use 1 every day for 3 weeks
  • Prevents ovulation
  • 4th week = break week, menstruation happens
  • Very good protection against pregnancy, but only 
  • when used daily!

Nuvaring
  • Stays inside vagina for 3 weeks
  • Comparable to contraceptive pill
  • Stops ovulation
  • Very good protection against pregnancy

Contraceptive injection
  • Injection every 3 months
  • Stops ovulation
  • Very good protection against pregnancy
  • Con: can take up to 2 years to become fertile again

Contraceptive pad
  • same as nuva ring but on the skin

IUD/Coil
  • GP(general practitioner) puts IUD inside of uterus
  • Kills sperm and prevents implantation
  • 1 - 5 years of protection
  • Con: can hurt slightly

  • Rod the size of a match
  • Underneath the skin in arm
  • Stops ovulation
  • Up to 3 years of protection

Sterilization
  • Physician seals off sperm ducts in men or fallopian tubes in women
  • Sperm cells/ova can't reach penis/uterus
  • Testes/ovaries remain in the body, keep working
  • Man will still produce a substance during ejaculation
  • Pro: no chance of getting pregnant
  • Con: practically irreversible

2 ways to stop a pregnancy
Morning-after-pill
  • Use shortly after intercourse (best within 12 hours, max within 72 hours)
  • Bought at pharmacies or drugstores (kruidvat, etos, etc.)
  • Contains a lot of hormones that stop fertilization.
  • Using pill often is dangerous!
  • Women often get sick because of the morning after pill, this can make you throw up the pill

Abortion
  • There are 3 types of abortion, depending on the time between abortion and intercourse
