Adjectives and Adverbs

(bijvoegelijke naamwoorden en bijwoorden)

1. Frank is a good singer 

2. My brother is a careful driver.

An adjective describes something or someone, it says something about tne noun. 

Adjectives and Adverbs

1. Frank sings well. 

2. My brother drives carefully.

Adverbs (Bijwoorden) can describe other words. An adverb says, for example, how something has happened or how something is done. It tells you something about the verb.

An adverb can also describe an adjective.

1. Frank is an extremely good singer.

2. My brother is an awfully careful driver.

3. It's an absolutely perfect video clip.

An adverb can also describe anothe adverb in the sentence.

1. Frank sings absolutely beautifully.

2. My brother drives really well.

3. That clip was filmed extremely perfectly. 

-ly

Most adverbs are formed by adding -ly after the adjective.

Beautiful - beautifully

Spellingregels voor adverbs:

- eindigt een adjective op y  dan wordt dit: -ily

 bijv. easy - easily

- eindigt een adjective op le dan wordt dit: ly

bijv. terrible - terribly

- eindigt een adjective op ic dan wordt dit: ically

bijv. basic - basically

Irregular adverbs

Adverb = adjective

- fast - fast               low - low

- long - long           fair - fair

- hard - hard

different forms:

good - well

Na de volgende werkwoorden krijg je altijd een adjective ipv een adverb:

- to be

- to seem

- to look

- to appear

- to sound

- to feel

- to taste

- to smell
