• On the 4th of July 1776 Congress (government of the 13 colonies) passes the Declaration of Independence.
• Written by later presidents such as Thomas Jefferson and John Adams.
• It is filled with ideas from the Enlightenment.

• In 1789 the constitution was accepted by Congress. This document described the position of the gov.
