-the question of the morality (represented turthfully, not romanticised).

-the author can discover the truth and represent it truthfully.

-a bit of social realism as well: Hester knits for the people in her village and that is her only source of income. So she is a poor single mother.

Setting

-Boston, part of the Massachussets Bay Colony, around 1600 prior to American independence.

-In 1620 Many English men (25 000) left England due to its Anglican Church, seeking religious freedom.

-These people were called Puritans because

they felt that the Anglican Church had not done enough to move away from Catholicism and become “purified.

- Once they immigrated to the Colonies, Puritans have set up a society where they made values like piety, modesty, and obedience central to the community.

Characters

Hester: dynamic

Chillingsworth: dynamic because he is well explained in the novel. Static because he remains fixed on the idea of revenge.

-Pearl: dynamic because she develops into a very curious child due to the secrecy of her mother's sin. She wants to know more about her father, also because she first hates DImmesdale then accepts him.

-Dimmesdale: a dynamic character because he has changed a lot due to his 'sickness' but afterwards also ends up feeling better and revealing the truth.
