§6.4 Dividing in a given ratio

What does this mean?!

Let's look at a simple example.

Dividing 400 euros between 2 friends in the given ratio of  3 to 1, or  3 : 1, as we say. As follows:

1.      3 : 1  means that there are 4 parts in total, of which one get 3 parts and               the other only 1 part.

2.    one part is  400 : 4 = 100 euros.

3.    one friend gets 3 x 100 = 300 euros, the other 1 x 100 = 100 euros.

4.  check:     300 + 100 = 400 euros.  It checks out!

Task 1 for you(!):

Divide 500 euros in the ratio 3 : 1 

between two friends.

dividing 500 in the ratio 3 : 1 gives

1. 300 and 200
2. 400 and 100
3. 375 and 125
4. 425 and 75

Explanation Task 1:

Divide 500 euros in the ratio 3 : 1.

1.  there are 3 + 1 = 4 parts in total

2.  one part = 500 :  4 = 125 euros

3.  one gets 3 x 125 = 375   and the other gets  1 x 125 = 125  euros
