Direct speech

"How old are you?" the man asked.

The little boy said, "I am Twenty-six."

His mother lifted her head from the book. "He is four," she said, smiling at the little boy.

"Is that so?" the man.

Indirect speech

The man asked how old he was. The little boy said he was twenty-six. 

His mother lifter her head from the book. She said that he was four. The man asked if that were so.
