Simplified maps

A map that gives a summary of a large area.

A map showing the shape and sizes of countries, usually showing the names of countries and cities.

A map showing physical features like mountains, rivers and lakes.

Informative maps

• Thematic map

A map showing information about a particular subject like climate, tourism, industry and cultures.

A map showing detailed information about a small area.

Reading maps

Four important features:

1. Title
2. North arrow or Compass rose
3. Legend
4. Scale

Title and north arrow

• Title tells you what the map is about
• North arrow shows which direction on the map is north
• Compass rose

Legend and scale

•  Legend explains colours, letters and symbols
• Scale explains how large the area shown is

Map Projections

• Earth is a mandarin
• Countries are sometimes bigger and sometimes smaller than they. really are

Longitude

• Coordinates

• Prime meridian
• Longitude
• Greenwich

A set of numbers and letters to determine a location on the Earth.

Vertical lines on a globe or map, used to find a location on the Earth.

The '0 degrees' meridian, going through Greenwich.

Determines if a location is on the west side or east side of the prime meridian.

Latitude

• Parallels
• Equator
• Latitude

Horizontal lines on a globe or map, used to find a location on the Earth.

The '0 degrees' parallel line which is exactly halfway between the North Pole and the South Pole.

Determines if a location is in the Northern or Southern hemisphere.

Finding a location with coordinates

•  The degrees of longitude and latitude together show the coordinates

1. Latitude: North or South
2. Longitude: East or West

• Lomé: 6°N and 1°E

Travel distances

• Absolute distance, distance in a straight line between two places
  
• Relative distance, time it takes to travel from one place to another
