Second conditional

We use the second conditional for unreal situations in the present or future.

if + past simple + would ('d)

If I was in trouble, I'd (=would) come to you for help.

(But I'm not in trouble.)

If I could invent something new, ...

I would be very happy if ...

Social conscience

What would you do in the following situations?

You see some kids in the street dropping litter. There is a litter bin five metres away.

You're in a shop. You see a woman shop-lifting some food. She's got three small children, who look hungry.

Your best friend is cheating on her boyfriend. She's been going out with him for ages, but she's also seeing another guy.

Third conditional

We use the third conditional for unreal situations in the past.

if + past perfect + would have

If you had asked me, I would have helped.

(But you didn't tell me, so I didn't help.)

Make sentences using the third conditional

The students were in a hurry. They didn't notice the man.

(hadn't / hurry / might)

If the students hadn't been in a hurry, they might have noticed the man.

I didn't give Jenny a lift. I didn't know she needed one.
(would / lift / known)

I bought this flat. My parents helped me.
(couldn't / parents / helped)

The dog didn't die. Someone rescued it.
(would / someone / rescued)
