Heat capacity

The heat capacity of an object, is the amount of heat (J) which need to be supplied to the object to increase its temperature by one degree Celcius.

The symbol for specific heat capacity is: C

The unit: J/°C

Specific heat capacity

Every substance has certain properties which can be used to recognize that material. Specific heat capacity is one of these properties.

The symbol for specific heat capacity is: c

The unit: J/g°C

What does it tell you?

It tells you about the amount of heat (J) needed to heat up 1 gram by 1 degree Celcius. Water needs 4,18 J/g°C while Iron only needs 0,46 J/g°C.

Heat of combustion

When you burn a material, heat will be released.

The amount of heat (J) released is always the same per unit mass.

The symbol for heat of combustion is:  ΔH∘c

The unit: MJ/m3 (gas), MJ/L (liquid), MJ/kg (solid)
