Past Simple

Je gebruikt de past simple wanneer iets in het verleden is gebeurd én geëindigd en als het belangrijk is wanneer het is gebeurd.

Past Simple: Signal Words

Words used to show something happened in the past:

• yesterday 
• one hour ago / ten minutes ago
• last night / last week / last Saturday / last month / last year 
• one hour ago / ten minutes ago

Was / Were: Positive sentence 

• Was and were tell us that something happened in the past.

Past Simple: Spelling Rules

RULE: Most regular verbs 

	Rule
Positive	-ed	She watch ed tv last night.
Negative	did not (didn't)	She didn't watch tv last night.
Question	Did ..... ?	Did she watch tv last night?

Past Simple: Spelling Rules

RULE: Verbs ending with -e

	Rule
Positive	add -d	She lived in Amsterdam last year.
Negative	did not (didn't)	She didn't live in Amsterdam last year.
Question	Did ..... ?	Did she live in Amsterdam last year?

Past Simple: Spelling Rules

RULE: Verbs ending with consonant (medeklinker) + -y.

BUT! If the y follows a vowel, add -ed. Pay = payed

Positive	Drop the y + ied	She tried to go to Spain last year.
Negative	did not (didn't)	She didn't try to go to Spain last year.
Question	Did ..... ?	Did she try to go to Spain last year?

RULE: One-syllable verbs ending with vowel (klinker) + consonant (medeklinker).

Positive	Double consonant + ed	She planned to go to Spain last year.
Negative	did not (didn't)	She didn't plan to go to Spain last year.
