Substition and ellipsis

Substitution and ellipsis are similar in many ways. Both enable the speaker to reduce what they are saying. 

  • Ellipsis is simply leaving something out that is (usually) obvious. 

  • Substitution involves using words such as do and so and not as a substitution of a part of a sentence.

Contrast and concession
 
There are different linking words to connect opposing ideas.

A contrast and a concession are quite similar, yet not the same.
A concession is a form of contrast in the second part of a sentence which is surprising or unexpected for the reader or listener.
