A definition of culture:
Culture can be defined as all the ways of life including arts, beliefs and institutions of a population that are passed down from generation to generation. Culture has been called "the way of life for an entire society." As such, it includes codes of manners, dress, food, traditions, language, religion, rituals, art.

Brief history
To understand where the British culture comes from, we need to look at the history and geography of the United Kingdom.

1,000 BC: the Celts arrive in Britain

They came from Central Europe

AD 43: Romans invade Britain
They came from what is now Italy.

Northern Ireland - The Troubles
From the 12th century Ireland was ruled by by the Kingdom of Britain. In 1921 Ireland, which was mainly catholic became independent an inde. But the north of Ireland which was mainly protestant wanted to stay part of the Kingdom of Britain.
So the country was split in two: the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Northern Ireland - The Troubles
The catholics in Northern Ireland were in the minority and suffered a lot of discrimination. They wanted to be part of the Republic of Ireland. To fight back against the protestant oppressors they formed terrorist organisations such as the IRA. The  The Troubles  lasted until 1999, when a peace treaty was signed.
