Wat is een passive? 
Een passive (passieve zin) is een zin waarin het onderwerp zelf niks doet, dus het voert het werkwoord niet uit. 
Het onderwerp ondergaat de handeling, het werkwoord wordt met het onderwerp gedaan. 

The thieves were arrested.

Wanneer gebruik je een passive? 
Ten eerste: zo min mogelijk. Een passive haalt de vaart uit de zin en klinkt vaak niet mooi. 

Wanneer dan wel? 
- Als wat er gebeurt (en met wie) veel belangrijker is dan wie het doet.
- Als je niet weet wie het doet, alleen dat het gebeurt. 
- Om afstand te nemen van wat er gebeurt. Populair bij politici. 
"Mistakes were made" ipv "I made a mistake" 
- Op toetsen, om te laten zien dat je hem indien nodig kunt gebruiken.

Hoe vorm ik een passive 
Een passive bestaat ALTIJD uit: 

- een vorm van het werkwoord "to be"
- het voltooid deelwoord van een hoofdwerkwoord (3e rijtje) 

LET OP: als je in een actieve zin een bepaalde werkwoordstijd zou moeten gebruiken, gebruik je in de bijbehorende passive dezelfde tijd! I bought milk / Milk was bought
