Learning goals
  • I know the difference between aerobic and anaerobic respiration
  • I know the chemical formula of both aerobic and anaerobic respiration
  • I know the disadvantages of anaerobic respiration
  • I know what fermentation is and can give examples of fermentation in different foods
  • I know the chemical formula for fermentation

Slide 6 - Diapositive

Key words
  • Combustion
  • Aerobic respiration
  • Anaerobic respiration
  • Oxygen debt
  • Fermentation

Slide 7 - Diapositive

Energy
Energy is needed for survival and is used for:
  • Building new cells
  • Movement
  • Heat

Food webs show sources of energy for different organisms
Digestion breaks down the food into smaller molecules
Respiration is the process of getting the energy from these molecules
Combustion is the process of burning something

Slide 9 - Vidéo

Aerobic respiration
Aerobic respiration is combustion with oxygen

The formula is:
glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water + energy

Formulas?

Slide 10 - Diapositive

Aerobic respiration
Aerobic respiration is combustion with oxygen

The formula is:
glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water + energy

Does the formula looks familiar? It is the opposite of photosynthesis!

Slide 11 - Diapositive

Anaerobic respiration
Anaerobic respiration takes place when your cells don’t have enough oxygen, for example, when you exercise very hard.

The formula is:
glucose → lactic acid + energy

Slide 12 - Diapositive

Anaerobic respiration
Anaerobic respiration has disadvantages:

  • Gives you way less energy
  • The lactic acid causes cramps
  • You will still breathe hard after exercising, this extra oxygen is needed to break down the lactic acid. This is called oxygen debt

Slide 14 - Vidéo

Fermentation
Fermentation is anaerobic respiration that takes place in plants, fungi or bacteria

The formula is:
glucose → alcohol + carbon dioxide + energy

This type of respiration is used to make beer
and wine, but also foods like bread, yogurt
and sauerkraut.
