  • End of the Middle Ages: inland and coastal shipping was very important
  • Northern Europe: grain, animal pelt, wood
  • England: wool and linen products
  • Southern Europe: wine and salt
  • Netherlands: bricks, beer, salted fish

  • A partnership was formed, called the Hanze
  • By a group of trading cities in northern and western Europe
  • In the Netherlands: Hanze cities along the Zuiderzee and the river IJssel
  • The trading route played an important role internationally from the twelveth to the sixteenth century

Amsterdam (not a Hanze city)
  • A city on the river the Amstel
  • Built around a dam in the Amstel in the 13th century
  • It was the biggest harbour in the Netherlands 
  • Very important for international trade
  • It was called a metropolis
  • In the 17th century: Amsterdam was the marketplace of the world and became more important than the Hanze cities
Nowadays: the harbour of Rotterdam has taken the place of the biggest harbour
