 to talk about a completed action that happened in the past (you know when it happened)

 to talk about two connected actions that happened around the same time
When we saw the fire, we called the emergency services.

 to talk about actions that happened in the past, but you don’t know exactly when.
I have finished my homework.

 to talk about experiences with 'never', 'already', 'just' and 'yet'.
They have already raised 5000 for charity.
 
to talk about actions that began in the past, but continue up to the present moment, often with 'for' and 'since'. How long have you been part of this organization? I’ve been a member for fifteen years
