Reasons for rebellion.
  1. The gewesten wanted to keep their own laws. Also, they did not want to pay more taxes. It made it even worse that the tax money was used by Spain to fight wars against countries that were trading partners of the Low Countries.
  2.  The people in The Low Countries hated the way Philip II treated protestants. He had a special court named the inquisition to hunt down and burn protestants.

Trying to bargain..
The nobles of the Low Countries tried to convince the governor, The Duchess of Parma, to get Philip II to stop punishing the protestants and end the centralisation. They wrote the Compromise of Nobles.

Down with the Catholic Church!
  • In 1566, in the lower part of The Low Countries, in the city of Steenvoorde an angry crowd destroyed a Catholic Church.
  • In a few months time all over the Low Countries Catholic Churches were smashed to bits. This was called the Iconoclastic Fury.

  • He send an army led by the Duke of Alva.
  • The Duke of Alva had to track down and punish the protestants who took part in the Iconiclastic Fury.
  • He used the Counsil of Troubles for this job.
