• Ze staan altijd voor het hoofdwerkwoord in de zin.
• Ze veranderen niet van vorm

Should/have to/must

Should = zou moeten

Je gebruikt should om advies te geven:

You should watch Stranger things. It's a great series!

You shouldn't smoke, it's bad for your health.

Should/have to/must

Have to = moeten

Have to is eigenlijk geen modal verb

Je gebruikt have to als iets verplicht is of als je het van iemand anders moet:

He has to be home at 10 o'clock. 

We have to hand in the project on Thursday.

must = moeten

Je gebruikt must als je zelf vindt dat iets moet: 

I ate so much at Christmas. I really must lose some weight.  

We must get together for dinner soon.
