General rule: we use the definite article 'the' in front of a noun when we believe the listener/reader knows exactly what we are specifically referring to.

When do we use the definite article 'the'?
When there is only one:
Pınar is the girl with the prettiest hair in our class!
When there is only one in that context:
When we were in istiklal avenue, Beyza went to the Sephora.
When we have already mentioned it:
A young woman named Sümeyye scored 1st in her English grammar test at her school. The girl was given candy as a gift for her performance by the school.
We use 'the' in many more occasions and there are exceptions, but that's for later in class!

Some words start with a consonant in writing, but are pronounced as a vowel. Pronunciation is key!

For an abbreviation that begins with A, E, I, O, or with an F, H, L, M, N, R, S, or X, we use an, because these abbreviations are pronounced with a vowel sound.
