What does "Formal" mean? 
What makes a letter 'Formal'?

Starting a formal letter:

1.  If you know the person:
you use Dear Mr …, for males or 
Dear Mrs …, for females. 
 for example:
Dear Mr Robinson,

2. If you do not know the person:
you use Dear Sir/Madam,             
to start your letter.

Finishing a formal letter:

1. If you know the person, 
you use: 
Yours sincerely,

2. If you don’t know the person, you use:
Yours faithfully,

 Important to remember:

  Do not use abbreviations / contractions (short form of verbs/words)
  • I would  instead of I’d
  • I am  instead of I'm
