GERUND 

(ING-VORM)

Vul in: I'm not very good at ____ (play) hockey.

Vul in: They stopped __(see) each other.

I am not very good at playing hockey is a gerund 

When do you use a gerund?

Gerund

1. When the verb (the gerund) is the subject of the sentence:

 Ex: Smoking is bad for you.

 Playing tennis is difficult.

2. After a preposition (in, on, under, behind, without, etc.)

Ex.: She is good at working on the computer.

They are afraid of losing the match.

She went from kissing him to slapping him in no time.  

Gerund

3. After one of these verbs: love, stop, start, keep on, avoid, enjoy

Ex:   I love going to the cinema.

  She just keeps on nagging.

  Stop talking please!

Gerund

4. After these expressions: no use, worth, look forward to, mind

 

Ex: It’s no use talking to him, he won’t listen to you.

 I look forward to meeting him.

 He doesn’t mind going to Spain.

Infinitive

In all other cases you use the infinitive (= the whole verb)

Ex: I’m trying to tell you to go home.

She appears to have chicken pox.

We’re learning to communicate better.

__________ (travel) to
far away places is fun.

My brother loves ___ (hang) around with his friends.

He is fond of _______(dance).

(have) .......... a friend like you is great.
