What can I do when in a text  there is a word I do not know?

An unknown word

1. Verb, adjective, noun? 
2. If a verb: look at the conjugation
3. Try to infer the meaning using the context.
4. Does it look like a word you know from another language?
5. Use the meaning that best suits the text. Does it make sense?
6. Dictionary, if it is available or allowed
