Much and many

In het Engels kun je op verschillende manieren zeggen hoeveel je van iets hebt.

Veel                   =     many, much, a lot of

Weinig              =     few, little

Een paar          =     a few

Een beetje      =     a little

Much and many

Wat is nou het verschil tussen much en many?

Woorden kunnen telbaar of ontelbaar zijn.

Bij bevestigende zinnen worden much en many alleen formeel (dus bijna niet) gebruikt. Wel wordt a lot of vaak gebruikt voor zowel telbare als ontelbare zelfstandige naamwoorden.

I've earned a lot of money since last year.

He has got a lot of coins in his piggy bank.

Gebruik alleen much en many in de bevestigende zinnen na de woorden: so, as en too:

He has got so many friends.

I've got as much money as he has.

Many gebruik je voor telbare woorden en much voor ontelbare woorden in vragende en ontkennende zinnen.

I don't need much money.

LET OP!      Few en little =  weinig, bijna niets.

                    A few en a little = een paar, een beetje

I use my allowance to pay for my few expenses.

I babysit for a few hours a day.

I spend  very little of my earnings.

I earn a little extra if I wash the car.
