Why George Orwell is as relevant today as ever
  • He is perhaps the most influential British author of the 20th century
  • He contributed memorable phrases to the English language
  • His greatest influence beyond his two classic novels (Animal Farm & 1984) was as a prose stylist.
  • 1984 is a reminder of the threat to democracy posed by those with power who proclaim ‘alternative facts’ and deny objective truths.

Animal Farm is an allegory
  • An allegory is a story in which simple characters are made to represent ideas or the ways particular types of people might behave in the real world;
  • They are often simple stories or fairy tales;
  • It is like an extended metaphor – one subject representing another;
  • For an allegory to be effective it must be subtle yet obvious to the reader what the object of writing is.
