1. Who Can Be President?

To run for president, a person must meet three requirements:
• Be at least 35 years old.
• Be born in the United States.
• Have lived in the U.S. for at least 14 years.
Example: Both Kamala Harris and Donald Trump meet these requirements for the 2024 elections.

2. Winning a Party’s Nomination
Before the presidential election, each political party must pick one candidate to represent them. This happens in primaries and caucuses:

Primaries: These are like regular elections. People vote for the candidate they want to represent their party.
Caucuses: These are meetings where party members discuss and vote for their favorite candidate.

3. Party Conventions
After the primaries and caucuses, each party holds a big meeting called a party convention.
• Delegates (people who represent the voters) officially vote for the party’s candidate.
• The chosen candidate then announces their running mate, the person who will be vice president if they win.

4. The Electoral College
The U.S. does not pick a president based on the total number of votes across the country. Instead, the president is chosen by a system called the Electoral College.
• Each state has a certain number of electors based on its population. Bigger states like California have more electors, while smaller states like Wyoming have fewer.
• In total, there are 538 electors. A candidate needs at least 270 electors to win.

5. Election Day

Election Day happens every four years on the first Tuesday in November. In 2024, it was on November 5th.

6. The Inauguration
The inauguration is the official ceremony where the new president takes office.
• It happens on January 20th after the election.
• The president takes an oath of office, promising to protect and defend the U.S. Constitution.

Donald Trump will be inaugurated on January 20, 2025.
