main events after absolutism ended and the effects of the French Revolution

2.4 French Revolution
The French did not trust their king anymore. The Marched on Versailles to force the king and queen to move to Paris. It would be easier to control them if they lived there. 

King Louis XVI tried to escape, but he was caught and put on trial for treason. 
The National Assembly ended the monarchy. France was a republic now

Reign of Terror
There were radicals in France who were not satisfied with France being a Republic. They wanted a bigger revolution and were very violent.

Robespierre was their leader and executed more than 40.000 people with the Guillotine. Because he thought all these people were against him and the revolution

French Revolution, why?
Reasons:
* Estate system
* Louis XVI was an absolute king
* An ampty treasury and new taxes
* The Enlightenment

Order of Events
*5th of May 1789: King asks the States-General to meet
*3rd estate declares themselves National Assembly   
* 14th of July: Storming of the Bastille
* Declarations of the Rights of Man and Citizen
* March on Versailles
* The Reign of Terror

The Reign of Terror
  • France became a republic in 1792. 
  • But some people were not satisfied yet.
  • These radicals and their leader Robespierre beheaded everyone who was against the revolution. 
  • Even King Louis and Queen Marie-Antoinette were beheaded and killed

Reign of Terror
  • There were moderates who fought against the radicals. 
  • Moderates wanted Enlightened people such as doctors, lawyers to rule France. 
  • They wrote a new contitution and gave France a Parliament
  • In Parliament were representatives of the French people who were chocen. 
  • But only richt people could vote. 

  • Poor people were still poor, still had no political influence...........

The revolution to its end
On November 9th 1799 Napoleon takes power in France

He imprisons the French government and becomes a Dictator
