§4.1: LEARNING GOALS
LG - Step 1: Read the learning goals above carefully. In the 3rd column mark the ones you feel good about with a “+” and the ones you might be a bit worried about with a “-”.

LG - Step 2: Take a good look at the categories of learning goals and compare them to your scores from S1. Now rank your categories from strongest to weakest using the letters A, B & C. (A - being strongest.)

LG - Step 3: Discuss what you have just filled in on your table with your neighbour(s). Try to explain / argue why you made that choice and ask the person for clarifying questions if need be.

  • Elements are the building blocks of the universe

  • Can’t be broken down into smaller substances

  • Each element is given its own number, called an atomic number


  • The table is divided into 3 categories

There are around 90 metals in the periodic table. 

Metals have the following properties:
  • Dense (high density)
  • Shiny
  • Good conductors (easily spread heat or electricity)
  • High melting point  (solid at room temperature, except Mercury)
  • Malleable (easily bent without breaking)
  • Metallic lattice structure
  • Atoms are organized neatly in rows

There are around 20 non-metals in the periodic table

Non-metals have the following properties:
  • Low density
  • Dull surface
  • Poor conductors (don’t spread heat or electricity)
  • Low melting point (Mostly gases at room temperature) 
  • Brittle (Don’t bend but break)

Metalloids are between metals and non-metals on the periodic table, therefore they share properties of both groups. 

Most metalloids are:
  • Shiny
  • Brittle
  • Poor conductors

  • These properties are different for each metalloid.
