What are you going to do?
In pairs, you are going to make a presentation about the Israel-Palestine war. This LessonUp will show you videos and articles that you are going to watch/read and use as sources for your presentation. Read the slides carefully! They explain the exercise.

You have +/- 40 minutes to prepare the presentation. After 40 minutes, you'll have to hand in your finished presentation + text on Teams.

Why are we doing this? The goals: 
First of all, we are not just Dutch citizens, we are world citizens, making it extremely important that we know and understand what is happening in the rest of the world. This conflict is extremely complicated and has been going on for a very long time. However, it is not talked about that much even though it is a very serious problem. 

Secondly, during your speaking exam you'll have to present about a certain topic (this can be a presentation or pitch), making this lesson a good preparation for your exam. Note: during the exam, you'll have to prepare and do the presentation on your own.

Goal of the presentation:
The goal of this presentation is to inform the audience. You are making a presentation for someone who has no idea what is going on. The presentation must be informative, this does not include your own opinion. See it as a news item you'll see on TV: only give factual, well-researched information
Be mindful of the words you use (for example: think about the difference between the words "killed" and "murdered"...)

The presentation: 
The presentation must answer the following questions: 
1) What is happening between the Israelian government & the Hamas right now? (Be specific!) 
2) Where is the war happening?
3) What is the history of this conflict? What has happened up to this point that lead to this war breaking out? (Give a brief history overview/a timeline - explain the major events leading up to this war) 
4) Who are the Hamas? What are their intentions? What are the intentions of the Israelian government? Look at both sides of the conflict!
5) How did the rest of the world respond to the war?

The presentation: 
- Must be between 4 and 6 minutes long
- You are allowed to use a PowerPoint with key words (steekwoorden) on it. You are allowed to use pictures, but make sure they are suitable for a presentation (i.e. I don't want to see very gory or horrifying pictures - be mindful of the audience)
- Make sure the presentation is organized (bijv. nette PowerPoint, logische volgorde), you are gramatically correct and you are easy to follow. Hier wordt je tijdens het examen onder andere ook op beoordeeld! 
- The presentation is, of course, in English.

What are you supposed to hand in?
1) A PowerPoint
2) A document (max 2 pages) in which you describe what you are going to say and when you're going to say it. Example: Dia 1 - welcome to our presentation about.... See this as a script for your presentation.  

You hand this in via teams, make sure both of your names are mentioned.

Important side notes: 
1) This presentation is not about who is right or who is wrong, it's not about picking sides or defending a side: it's about understanding the conflict and helping others understand the conflict. It's about factual information, not opinions. It is extremely important that you are serious and respectful. Prepare the presentation for someone who knows absolutely nothing about what is going on and help them understand. Jokes or disrespectful opinions will not be tolerated. 

2) The videos show fragments of the war. If this is something that could possibly trigger you or that you don't want to watch, I encourage you to read the articles instead.

The following slides will provide you with the information you need. Watch the videos, read the articles and make your presentation. You don't have to use all of these sources, pick the ones you find most useful. Use at least one article and one video.
