Effective verbs

Aims

• You can explain what a thesaurus is
• You know how to use a thesaurus
• You know what effective verbs are
• You can use effective verbs in your writing

What are verbs?

1. Words for things, people, places
2. Words for descriptions
3. Words for actions
4. Words that refer back to other words

Thesaurus

• A "synonym dictionary"
• Book form (e.g. Roget's) or online (thesaurus.com)
• Useful for enriching your writing

Effective verbs

• Effective verbs are verbs that describe not just an action but also how that action is done
• Example: walk is not an effective verb, but parade, stroll, march, sprint and skip are 
• All of these mean to walk in a certain way
• A good tool for this is your thesaurus

Replace all verbs with effective verbs. Anna was walking (1) to school when she saw (2) another girl. She said (3): "Hi! What are you looking (4) at?" "There is a puppy in that window!" said (5) the other girl. "O my god, that is so cute!" said (6) Anna. Both girls laughed (7) and then walked (8) to school together
