Today we are going to learn:

How we organize all organisms. 

How we name organisms. 

Taxonomic groups

The are millions of different species. To get a good understanding of them, we organize them in different groups. These groups start big, but end up small and specific. 

Prokaryotes and eukaryotes

Domains and kingdoms 

How do we classify the species?

Different species can be classified in the same groups when they share a certain characteristic/feature with each other. For example: Having a spine, birthing live offspring or having certain organelles.

Exercise

Write down all the taxonomic groups in your notebook, but leave some space in between that. When you are finished with that, you can take out your phone, and look up/write down, how a red squirrel is classified. So write down each group, and with that, write down what a shared characteristic in that group is. 

Homework

The homework for next lesson will be all exercises from paragraph 3.1, they start on page 170 of your workbook.
