What is Irony?

Irony in Literature 

1. A deliberate gap between the language used and what is being discussed;

2. Irony results when there is a difference in point of view between a character and the narrator or reader;

Types of Irony

There are three major types of Irony:

Verbal, Dramatic and Situational 

What is Verbal Irony?

Verbal Irony (VI)

Refers to spoken words only

&

Occurs when someone says one thing, but suggests or intends the opposite 

+

Sarcasm = verbal irony:

- speaker emphatically states the flat oppositer of the truth 

&

- employed for the purpose of ridicule, mock or to express contempt

What is Dramatic Irony?

Dramatic Irony (DI)

Contrast between a character's actions or words and the true situation

&

The character cannot understand or see the contrast but the reader or audience can

=

A situation in which the audience or reader knows something about present or future circumstances that the character does not know

What is Situational Irony?

Situational Irony (SI)

Recognition of the oddness or unfairness of a given situation
