The Passive

Het verschil tussen passief en actief

The dog bites the man --> The man was bitten by the dog.

The teacher hit the pupil --> the pupil was hit by the teacher

Simple

Present simple + Past simple

Vorm van am/is/are/was/were + voltooid deelwoord

Future Simple 

Will be + voltooid deelwoord

I deliver the post every day --> The post is delivered every day (by me)

He asked me to do this --> I was asked to do this (by him)

I will help him tomorrow --> He will be helped tomorrow (by me)

Continuous

Present continuous + Past continuous

Vorm van to be + being + voltooid deelwoord

He is playing a game --> A game is being played (by him)

We were having a good time --> A good time was being had (by us)

Perfect

Present Perfect + Past Perfect

Vorm van have/has/had + been + voltooid deelwoord

He has paid him five dollars --> Five dollars have been paid.

She had bought a new toy --> A new toy had been bought.

When to use the passive? (1)

1. De nadruk op de persoon of voorwerp die de actie ondergaat:

The Mona Lisa was painted by Leonardo Da Vinci. 

2. Wanneer het niet belangrijk of niet bekend is wie iets gedaan heeft

He was arrested . (obvious)

My bike has been stolen . (unknown)

The road is being repaired. (unimportant)

The form can be obtained from the post office. (people in general)

De passive voice wordt vooral gebruikt in hogere niveaus van schrijven

1.My dog eats a lot of food.
2.Our friends bought a tent.
3.The girls have enjoyed the holiday.

4.We will rob the bank.
5.The boy opens the door
6.Jo wrote a song

1. A lot of food is eaten by my dog.

4. The bank will be robbed by us.

The dog has bitten the man.

The boys were playing a game.

Someone stole my bike yesterday.

I had made a cake.

Sara's brother is bullying her.

The girls watched a movie.

The happy man held the baby.
