to-infinitive or verb+ing?

In het Engels bestaan er bepaalde werkwoordcombinaties. Er is geen regel voor. Je moet ze uit je hoofd leren. 

In deze les gaan we met sommige combinaties oefenen.

Je maakt de verschillende combinaties met to en het hele werkwoord of met werkwoord+ing

We gebruiken to-infinitive na deze werkwoorden:

* (can/can't) afford    *promise              

*agree                             * refuse

*decide                           * remember

*forget                             * would like

*hope                                * pretend

*learn                                * try

*need                                * want

*offer                                * plan

He refused to help us.

I hope to see you soon.

We gebruiken verb+ing na deze werkwoorden:

* avoid                 * can't stand

* can't help        * dislike

*feel like              * don't mind

* keep                   * enjoy

* miss                    * hate

* suggest             * like

* stop                     *love

I don't mind doing my homework.

He keeps calling me.

I forgot ... my homework to school.

1. to bring
2. bringing

We need ...! The bus is coming.

1. to hurry
2. hurrying

They stopped ... and went to bed.

1. to play
2. playing

Can you afford ... in an expensive hotel?

1. staying
2. to stay

The little boy pretended ... a doctor.

1. to be
2. being

I can't help ... . The comedian is very funny.

1. to laugh
2. laughing

Why do you keep ... your things?

1. to lose
2. losing

I hate ... without my phone. (be)

I sometimes forget ... my phone. (charge)

I don't mind ... but I can't stand ... phone calls.
(text/make)

I like ... .
I want ... .
(swim)

Long story short:

There aren't any rules for verb patterns. You'll have to rely on your own language skills or learn them by heart and practice a lot!
