Je gebruikt de possessive om bezit aan te geven of om aan te geven dat iets bij iets anders hoort.

Dit kan met:

The possessive

's is used for:

- Bij personen en dieren

- Enkelvoud : The dog's tail is beautiful

- Meervoudsvormen die niet eindigen op -s : The people's wishes.

- Eigennamen, ook als die op -s eindigen : Nick's mother - Tess's cars

- Bij winkels en plekken waar je vaker komt : The baker's  

   Bing often goes to Eli's

The possessive

' is used for: 

- Bij personen en dieren

- Meervoudsvormen die wel eindigen op -s : Your parents' opinion

Soms kun je bij 's of ' het zelfstandig naamwoord dat erachter komt weglaten, om herhaling te voorkomen.

This is my dad's car -> This car is my dad's (car).

The possessive

of is used for:

- Bij dingen : Put your bike at the back of the house.

- Bij geografische locaties : The capital of Germany is Berlin.

   The corner of the street.
