6.3.1 The lord of the manor

Live after the fall of Rome
Borders faded -> people were left without protection.
No protection resulted in the disappearance of money and trade

Many people left the city to work on the countryside as farmers (they became peasants)

They worked for lords who could protect them.

A demesne (een domein)
The land which a lord of the manor managed himself, for his own use.

The lord lived in a manor (later these manors grew to wooden en stone castles). On a demesne there were several farm.

Peasants on the demesne
  • Worked for the lord (all kinds of jobs).
  • Gave a portion of their harvest to the lord.

The lord protected them from thiefs and raids.

Serfdom
A serf was a farmer that was no longer free.
  • give part of produce (rent) to lord
  • servile duties = work serfs had to perform for the lord free of charge
  • couldn't leave the manor without permission
  • couldn't marry without the lord's permission

Working of serfs on a domain is called manorialism.
Serfs were not allowed to leave their domain. We call this serfdom.
