adjectives = bijvoegelijke naamwoorden

Zegt iets over een zelfstandig naamwoord.

adverbs = bijwoorden
Zegt iets over een werkwoord (hoe iets gebeurt), een bijvoegelijk naamwoord of een ander bijwoord in de zin.

Let op: Na de werkwoorden to be, to seem, to feel, to look, to smell, to sound en to taste gebruik je een adjective (bijv. nmw) in plaats van een adverb (bijw.). 
My grandparents are kind. 
The soup tastes awful.  

Hoe maak je een adverb (bijwoord)? --> door -ly achter het adjective (bijv. nmw) te zetten

beautiful - beautifully

brief - briefly

Let op speciale spelling wanneer bijvoegelijk nmw eindigt op: 

terrible - terribly (-le, dan verandert in -ly)
easy - easily (medeklinker + y, dan verandert -y in -ily)

fantastic - fantastically (-ic, dan komt er -ally achter)

To be able to: in staat zijn iets te doen/kunnen

+	vorm van to be + able to + hele ww.	I 'm able to visit you this weekend. We are able to go to the party today.
Ontkennend	cannot/can't + hele ww.	My little sister can't swim yet.
-	vorm van to be + not + able to + hele ww.	He is not able to run ten miles. They are not able to go to the party.
Vragend	can + ondw. + hele ww.	Can she play chess?

Let op: Met to be able to kun je alle tijden uitdrukken, de vorm van to be verandert dan (were able to, will be able to, etc). Can verandert niet, behalve voor de past simple en in sommige gevallen voor de future (could).

Past continuous: als je wilt benadrukken dat iets in het verleden een tijdje aan de gang was.

Past simple: als je wilt zeggen dat iets in het verleden gebeurd is en nu is afgelopen.

Vaak gebruik je de past continuous en past simple samen in een zin --> om aan te geven dat iets gebeurde (past simple) terwijl er al iets aan de gang was (past continuous)

I was waiting for the bus when it started to rain. 

Nikki was doing the dishes when the doorbell rang. 

We were climbing the hill when one of us slipped and fell.

Ontkenden vragen kun je gebruiken om: 

- een retorische vraag te stellen;

- verrassing uit te drukken;

- een vraag te stellen waarvan je verwacht dat het antwoord erop 'ja' is.

Hoe maakt je negative questions (ontkennende vragen)? 

Ontkennende vragen maak je door de ontkennende vorm van to be, have (got) of de hulpwerkwoorden do/did of can voorop te zetten.  

Doesn't she know rock climbing is very dangerous?
Wasn't she a famous actress a long time ago? 
Can't you tell me how you feel?
