What does condition mean? (los van conditie/staat)

Conditionals = if-sentences

If you melt ice, it becomes water

If you study, you will pass

If I had a million pounds, I would buy a castle 

Conditionals 

Twee delen in de zin: 

1.  'if' part
2. main part (what will happen)

If you leave now, you will be on time 

You will be on time if you leave now 

Het maakt niet uit welk deel eerst komt. 

Let op: will mag nooit in het if deel staan!

If-zinnen

Vier varianten: wij gaan er 3 bekijken:

1. zero conditional
2. first conditional
3. second conditional 

Elke conditional heeft dezelfde structuur (if-deel en main deel). Alleen het gebruik van de tijden is anders! 

If-zinnen: zero

1. zero conditional 

vorm:                                     if deel: present simple

                                                 main deel: present simple

Wanneer gebruiken:     het gevolg staat vast. het is een feit

2. first conditional

vorm:                                  if deel: present simple
                                              main deel: will (not) + hele ww 

Wanneer gebruiken:   als iets zeer waarschijnlijk gaat gebeuren 

If I receive an invitation, I will go to the party
I will give you chocolate if you help me

If-zinnen: second

3. second conditional 

vorm:                                      if deel: past simple

                                                  main deel: would (not) + hele ww

Wanneer gebruiken:      zeer onwaarschijnlijk dat het gaat gebeuren

If Tom knew your phone number, he would call you 

If they won the match, they would be really happy
