Lesson goals

• You know how the short and long hydrological cycles work and in which forms water is stored.
• You understand why a lot of water is unsuitable or unreachable for humans.
• You can distinguish areas on the map of the world which are (too) dry or (too) wet.

The water cycle

Or how it is called in the geography: the hydrological cycle.

1. Water moves through evaporation from the ocean to the sky
2. Water condensates in clouds and will eventually rain down
3. In the long water cycle the water goes over land, and in the short cycle it stays above the ocean.

Distribution

• Earth is the blue planet for a reason.
• 70% of Earth is water.
•  Divided between fresh water and salt water.
• Humans can only use fresh water.

Distribution of water

• Water is stored in surface water and

groundwater.

Only 2,5 percent of the total water is fresh,

from which only 1 percent is accessible.

This is why there is not enough water in some

places.

Dry and wet areas

Humans need water to survive, this can sometimes be quite hard in dry regions. 

In more wet areas, people use water as if there is enough for everyone. We even flush our toilet with fresh water!
