Wanneer -->'s :
- bij personen (of dieren) in enkelvoud ->  Peter's car.  The dog's tail is long.

- bij pers / dieren in het mv, als dat niet eindigt op een -s  -> Children's books

- Uitdrukkingen van tijd in enkelvoud -> an hour's walk

Wanneer --> ' :
- bij namen die eindigen op een -s  ->James' bike.
- bij pers / dieren die in het mv eindigen op een -s  -> The boys'  bikes. 
- uitdrukkingen van tijd in meervoud --> A two weeks' holiday.

*dit betekent dus dat bij bijna alle namen/dieren/dingen die eindigen op  -s je alleen maar een  '  mag gebruiken.
