The Caribbean
The Caribbean is a massive archipelago north of 
South America.

They consists of countries like:
  • Puerto Rico 
  • Cuba
  • Bahamas (an archipelago as well)
  • Jamaica
  • Aruba
  • Curaçao
  • Sint Maarten

Their culture is heavily influenced by Europe since they once belonged to four different Europian Countries as colonies (England, The Netherlands, France, Spain).

Steel pans were created on the Caribbean islands pf Trinidad and Tobago in the 1930's...They carried with them elements of their African Culture, including the playing of hand drums.


After the slaves were freed in 1834...They thought it could be used to pass secret messages and that it might lead to a revolution.

That's why, around 1880, the British government banned the playing of drums...and the bamboo tubes were eventually abandoned.

The first simple metal pans were made from old oil drums...through trail and error the metal pans evolved into the steel pan.

Over the last 40 years, steel bands have become more well-know around the world...Bach, Beethoven, Mozart. 

However, Trinidad is still the centre of pan activity...And who could imagine a Caribbean carnival without Trinidad and Tobago's national instrument.
